Project Description

Community website – 2012 Child Theme – Bel Res

Bel Res (www.belvedere-blocks.co.uk) is a community website I created for local residents in the Belvedere housing estate; an estate in which I live. In essence I was the client as I developed the site for myself and my neighbours and not for a third party client. What the site lacks in design is made up for in its practical approach and functionality.

I could not give too much of my time in the development of the site and so opted to use the WordPress 2012 theme as I feel it has a nice and clean design. A child theme was created and the basic page structure was quickly put in place. I did not want residence of Bel Res to have to go into the WordPress admin area in order to create blog posts. I wanted it simple and easy for them to use. So I used the ‘User frontend’ plugin to easily create a page form for them to complete the site blogging. A simple frontend Dashboard was also put in place for resident to edit or delete their blog posts.

Blog posting and commenting was strictly restricted to registered residents and so Bel Res also uses Gravity Forms to gather user data for logging site registration. Again all of this was accomplished on the front end of the site for requesting registration and for administrators only, a page for entering actual site registrations. Finally I added Revolution slider to give the site extra appeal to finish off its look.

All in all the site took me about two weekends to complete.

The site has proved very popular with the residents of the Belvedere blocks and helpful in gathering opinions in regards to the day to day running of the estate. A future plan is in the works to possible develop a second level or Private blog area for residents who wish to discuss estate matters outside of the public forum.
